Defence ministry bloomer: Bidar is in AP

The defence ministry informed the Parliament on Monday that Bidar is located in Andhra Pradesh and not in Karnataka as the government records and maps suggest.

While submitting a list of dwelling units constructed under the Married Accommodation Project (MAP), Defence Minister A K Antony furnished a state-wise list of such dwelling units.
The list says Bidar is in Karnataka where 226 dwelling units are being constructed for Air Force personnel.

For decades, Indian Air Force has a training base for fighter pilots in Bidar in north Karnataka housing Kiran mark-II and Hawk advanced jet trainer. It is the home base for IAF's much-acclaimed Suryakiran aerobatics team.

But when the minister responded to a written question on the status of the married accommodation project raised by BJP MP Lalji Tandon, the response is tagged with an annexure which details state-wise list of dwelling units under construction. This list carries the bloomer. Reached out for reaction, a defence ministry spokesperson refused to comment.

According to the official list shared with Lok Sabha members, houses for service personnel under MAP are being constructed in three places in Andhra Pradesh and Bidar is one of them. Historically, Bidar was part of Hyderabad state till 1956. In Karnataka, such houses are under construction in Bangalore, Karwar, Mysore and Belgaum.
