55 new FM radio channels are slated to come up in different parts of Karnataka, following the Centre’s approval to policy guidelines for expansion of private radio stations in the country. | |
The new stations will come up in Bangalore (one), Mysore (two), and Mangalore (one), four each in Belgaum, Bellary and Davangere, and three each in Gulbarga, Bidar, Bijapur, Chikmaglur, Chitradurga, Gadag Betageri, Hassan, Hospet, Kolar, Raichur, Shimoga, Tumkur, and Udupi. All the proposed channels will be run by private entities. Now, the State has 41 radio channels, including some being run by All India Radio. As per the note prepared by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which was approved by the Union Cabinet on Thursday, a total of 839 new FM radio channels are proposed to come up in 294 cities and towns across the country. According to the government’s new policy, all the cities with one lakh and above population will have a private FM radio channel. The government plans to award the licences to private companies through a process of e-bidding, followed by Department of Telecom for the auctioning of 3G spectrum, sources in the government told Deccan Herald.
