Moulana Azad National Urdu University to set up satellite centre in Bidar

Moulana Azad National Urdu University, based in Hyderabad, will set up an off-site campus in Bidar that comprises, an Urdu-medium CBSE school, a polytechnic and a teachers training centre.

Minister for Human Resources Development M.M. Pallam Raju will lay the foundation stone for the campus on November 30. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande are expected to be present.

The campus will come up on government land near Bidar. Till the construction is complete, the school and colleges will run in rented buildings. The former MLC Khaji Arshed Ali said the project had the potential to change the educational scenario in the district.

“The quality of education is perennially low here and a model school is the need of the hour. Vocational training institutions like ITI and polytechnic will be of great help. The teachers training institute will help address the problem of shortage of teachers,” he said.

Yousuf Raheem Bidri, convenor of Yarane Adab, an association of Urdu lovers, said that Bidar has a large population of Urdu-speaking people. Urdu is not restricted to Muslims here. Historically, generations have been educated in Urdu medium, he said. “Setting up an off-site campus is part of the university’s mandate. However, it can be only be sanctioned when the State government expresses interest,” N. Dharam Singh, MP said. He said he would seek financial support from the Union and State governments to build the campus.

Background

Bidar is among the 90 minority concentrated districts in the country with minorities forming nearly a third of the population, selected by the Union government. The multi-sector development plan implemented based on the recommendations of the Rajendra Sachar committee is underway in Bidar.

The proposal to set-up an off-site campus was sent to the university by Mr. Singh in 2010.

The State government had directed the district administration to hand over 10 acres of land to the university for the construction of the campus. Sameer Shukla, the then Deputy Commissioner, identified land near Malkapur village on the outskirts of the city.

However, part of it turned out to be forest land under ‘C’ and ‘D’ category. The land for the university was finally found near Solpur village in Bidar taluk.
