People are undergoing untold suffering. There is really no way we can console them.

MLA demands beginning of relief measures immediately

Bidar is facing the worst drought in over 40 years, said Eshwar Khandre, MLA, here on Friday.

He was speaking at the Karnataka Development Programme review meeting at the zilla panchayat. “People are undergoing untold suffering. There is really no way we can console them,” he said.

He demanded that the State government declare Bidar a drought-hit district, start relief measures such as supplying drinking water, setting up fodder banks, creating jobs under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), and assessment of crop loss. He argued that most water sources had dried up across the district and it was time to start providing water through tankers to villages.

‘Last option’

Anurag Tewari, Deputy Commissioner, said the State government had asked officials to consider using tankers for water supply as the last option.

“First we will explore using water from surface sources, and then take up cleaning and de-silting of tanks and wells, and then flushing and deepening of borewells. When none of them yield water, we will look at tankers,” he said.

Mallikarjun Khuba, MLA, said officials had not done a proper job of assessing crop-loss. Few have visited fields and prepared reports after meeting farmers. Most have done it from their offices, he said. “Officials keep saying MNREGA is not attracting labourers. I believe that is due to delays in payment to MNREGA labourers,” he said. He asked the officials to speed up payment and create rural jobs under the scheme.

District in-charge Minister Umashree, who was also present, said the government had a fairly clear idea of the scarcity situation. “We are releasing money to Deputy Commissioners to take up water supply works and starting MNREGA works,” she said.
