An Assistant Professor committed suicide by hanging himself here, apparently dejected over delay in awarding punishment to those who were responsible for the suicide of his son and on unkept promises of compensation by the government, police said today.
57-year-old Manikrao Suryavamshi, Assistant Professor of English in a Government College, in his death note on Sunday stated that the delay in punishing those who drove his son, a Panchayat Development Officer, to suicide as the reason for his taking the extreme step.
"The government officials and political leaders including the present Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who was Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister then, visited my residence in 2011, promised to bring the culprits to book and assured compensation to my family", stated in his death note.
"The culprits who are responsible for my son's death have secured bail and are leading a happy life now. This is the result of the failure of the system. I am dejected in life by the rampant corruption and harassment of sincere people", he stated.
Manikrao's son Vijaykumar who was serving as Panchayat Development Officer of Byalahalli in Bhalki taluk committed suicide by hanging on Noveber nine, 2011 as he was unable to bear the harassment of his seniors including a top official of the panchayat.
The suicide had triggerred off public outrage and even strike by PDOs then. (PTI)
