It was in 2004 that an ambitious proposal was made to showcase the heritage-rich Hyderabad–Karnataka region by linking tour operators in Telangana and Maharashtra with those in Bengaluru to establish tourist circuits.
The idea was to link Ajanta, Ellora, Aurangabad, Bidar, Hyderabad, and Nagarjunakonda under the Buddhist circuit and Nagpur, Ausa, Parinda, Umarga, Bidar, and Golkonda under the Bahmani heritage circuit in the first phase. However, little has happened beyond the grand proposal.
On a smaller scale, initiatives that could protect heritage while bolstering local economy have also remained on paper. The proposal to convert at least 10 per cent of the 345 heritage homes in Bidar into homestays has not been taken forward. “The government should educate heritage home owners that running homestays can be profitable. Only then can we see some entrepreneurship,” said to B.G. Shetkar, president, Bidar Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
