Punjab wants air, four-lane road link to Bidar

Taking up the cause of lakhs of inconvenienced Sikh pilgrims who visit Bidar every year in Karnataka where the first Sikh Guru Nanak Dev had dug out a water source, the Punjab Government has asked the Centre for air and four-lane road connectivity to the historic Sikh pilgrimage.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has impressed upon the Centre to allow domestic flights from the Indian Air Force (IAF) station at Bidar and four-lane the 200-km stretch of the road leading from Takht Sachkhand Hazur Sahib in Nanded to Bidar.

In a demi-official letter to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh, Badal has sought permission to allow domestic flights at IAF station in Bidar for the convenience of lakhs of devotees.

“I recently visited Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jheera in Bidar to pay obeisance on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Nanak Jheera Pargat Samagam, where the Sikh sangat demanded air connectivity with Bidar for quick and comfortable journey,” Badal wrote. He requested Singh to immediately take up the matter with Union Ministry of Defence for allowing domestic flights at Bidar IAF station.

In a separate letter to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways CP Joshi, Badal has demanded that National Highway-7 should be connected with National Highway-9 with a four-lane road from Nanded to Bidar via Degloor.

Badal apprised Joshi about the dilapidated condition of the road connecting the two historical and most frequented Sikh shrines which caused great hardship to the pilgrims who visit these places of religious importance in large numbers.

Referring to the various national highway projects in Punjab, the CM has drawn attention of the Union Government towards the snags in the works undertaken for upgradation of the Kharar-Kurali section of National Highway-21; four-laning of 20-km stretch of NH-1 between Jalandhar and Dhilwan; four to six-laning of NH-95 from Kharar to Ludhiana; and slow progress of six-laning of NH-1 from Shambhu border to Jalandhar.

Badal has urged Joshi to review the decision to upgrade 11-km stretch of Kharar-Kurali NH-21 on Bulid Operate Transfer (BOT) basis, which, he said, was not viable. “Since two toll plazas already exist between Kharar and Ropar, another toll plaza between Kharar and Kurali cannot be established as per the guidelines if this section is upgraded on BOT basis,” CM pointed out, while calling for four-laning of the Kharar-Kurali NH-21 on government expenses. Due to its narrowness, this highway had ecome a “killer highway”, he pointed out.

The CM also sought four-laning of the 20-km section of NH-1 between Jalandhar and Dhilwan, which has become a bottleneck in the six-lane NH-1 from Panipat to Jalandhar.

Reminding the Centre about the Prime Minister’s announcement in 2006 to six-lane Chandigarh-Ludhiana NH-95, Badal told Joshi that work on the project has not yet started.

Soon Bidar may get Solar Park.

One of the proposed locations is Mannur village in Bijapur district, where 4,000 acres have been identified to develop a solar park of 500 MW capacity, according to Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje. Sources said other proposed locations are in Raichur and Yadgir districts.

Packaging unit for buffalo milk established in Bidar

It will cater to Hyderabad market where there is huge demand

The Bidar-Gulbarga Cooperative Milk Producers Societies Union Ltd. has set up a separate packaging unit for buffalo milk here to cater to the Hyderabad market.

This unit is part of the 30,000-litre packaging unit that has come up on the milk dairy premises on Janawada Road here.

Opportunity

“There is a huge demand for buffalo milk in Hyderabad. The city is within 140 km from Bidar and so we want to cash in on the opportunity,” union president Mallikarjun Biradar told presspersons here on Thursday.

“We collect 12,500 litres of buffalo milk a day. We plan to sell at least 8,000 litres a day in the Hyderabad market.”

Having a packaging unit in Bidar would help us address a major issue, he said.

Mr. Biradar said that till now they had to take all the milk collected in Bidar to Gulbarga to package it. The process took time, leading to a day's gap between collection and sale. With the packaging unit in Bidar, the delay would be avoided and we would be able to sell fresh milk, Mr. Biradar said.

“Till now, we sold a mixture of cow and buffalo milk. But with a separate facility to package buffalo milk, we can cater to a niche market and possibly increase our revenue,” he said.

Special status likely for Hyderabad-Karnataka region

The five-decade long struggle of over one crore people in the backward Hyderabad-Karnataka region, including Bidar, Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur and Koppal districts, for special status is likely to end happily as union home minister P Chidambaram assured that a bill to this effect would be introduced in the next parliament session.

The assurance came when an all-party delegation led by chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda met Chidambaram in New Delhi on Thursday. “The draft bill has already been sent to the prime minister’s office (PMO). The union cabinet will approve the bill after its evaluation by the PMO. Then it will be tabled in parliament for approval,” Chidambaram said.

The special status, once conferred through amendment to Article 371 of the constitution, will enable the state to provide special reservation for people from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region in jobs and higher education.

The state delegation also stressed the need for immediate release of at least 2TMC of water from the Koyna dam in Maharashtra to provide relief to people in northern Karnataka, which is reeling under a severe drought.
Water resources minister Basavaraj Bommai said Gowda spoke to his Maharashtra counterpart Prithviraj Chavan. On Wednesday, union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar too had asked Chavan to consider Karnataka’s request. Bommai expressed confidence that Maharashtra would release the water in two days.
