Cyclists get a taste of Bidar’s rich history

Young boys and girls woke up early and rode their bicycles to the Bidar Fort to participate in the Heritage Cycle Rally on Sunday. They pedalled through the streets dotted with heritage structures, monuments and places frequented by tourists. They stopped at street corners to listen to a brief history and contextual information provided by historian Abdul Samad Bharati and Shivakumar Uppe, convenor of the local INTACH chapter.

The rally began and ended at the fort.

Traffic police had to stop vehicles at intersections and divert traffic at places.

Dr. Uppe spoke about the glorious tradition of multiculturalism, religious and linguistic harmony. Mr. Bharati traced the history of the district from the reign of the Kakatiya kings to the Delhi Sultanate, Bahamani, Baridshahi kings and the Hyderabad Nizam. He also spoke of the cultural revolution of 12th century led by Basaveshwara and other Sharanas. At the end, the participants gathered in front of the Rangeen Mahal, and dispersed after refreshments. Over 100 cyclists participated. Shiva Kumar, a successful businessman from Hyderabad who hails form Bidar, said he enjoyed cycling. “I come home for weekends. But this Sunday has been memorable,” he said.

Heritage week starts in Bidar

National Heritage Week started in Bidar on Wednesday with a heritage walk in which students, youth club members and enthusiasts took part.

Historians Jayashree Prabha and Abdul Samad Bharati spoke about the need to protect monuments and conserve history.

Mr. Bharati, who has written books on the historical monuments of Bidar, asked youngsters to develop a pride for their city and invite their friends and relatives to visit Bidar.

A.M.V. Subramaniam, superintending archaeologist, Dharwad circle, Archaeological Survey of India, said, “Monuments can be protected only by the involvement of the public and stake-holders. ASI is implementing several outreach programmes to create awareness about monuments among the youth and to build a relationship with the stake-holding communities.”

Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy flagged off the walk. Mouneshwar Kuruvatti, conservation assistant, Shivakumar V. Uppe, convenor of the local INTAC chapter, and others were present.

Bike rally

The district administration is organising a Heritage Cycling Expedition on Sunday. Those interested may register with the DC’s office. The Department of Tourism, Indian Heritage Cities Network, ASI and Bidar Rotary Club are the partners.

‘Speed up works’

The Managing Director of Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Harsha Gupta said on Thursday that works on underground drainage and water supply in the city will be put on fast-track. He said works in the first phase had slowed down. He instructed officials to look into this. He asked officials of the Karnataka urban water supply and sewerage board to work in coordination with KUIDFC. He told them to ensure that heritage structures are not damaged.

Jaffer expresses concern over slow pace of works

Only 3 p.c. of UGD work has been completed in 12 months’

Deputy Commissioner P.C. Jaffer has expressed concern over the slow pace at which various development works in the district are progressing.

At a meeting to review ongoing projects here on Tuesday, Mr. Jaffer observed that the progress of the underground drainage work taken up by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation was just 3 per cent in 12 months. The project was supposed to be completed in 18 months. How can the remaining 97 per cent be completed in six months, he asked officials.

He instructed officials to issue notice to the contractors and seek explanations. He pointed out that only 15 per cent of the drinking water project had been completed in one year. It had to be expedited, he said.

He asked officials to resolve the issue that had arisen out of objections filed by village residents against the construction of the sewage treatment plant as part of the underground drainage system.

Several small- and medium-scale works taken up under the Chief Ministers Small and Medium Town Development Programme had been delayed for too long. They should be completed by September-end, he said.

Several works taken up under the Karnataka State Financial Corporation and the 22.75 per cent allocation scheme in the Bidar City Municipal Council (CMC) have been pending since 2009. They should be completed soon, he said. He directed CMC officials to submit proposals for new projects to be taken up for 2012-2013.

Mr. Jaffer said that the CMC was lagging behind in revenue collection. The problem should be addressed now before it affected the financial condition of the institution, he said. “Even the revenue collection figures submitted by officials are not exact. The CMC should reassess the number of taxable properties and the estimated revenue.” It should also intensify revenue collection measures, he added.

‘Make a list’

Several residents did not pay water bills regularly. Officials should prepare a list of unregistered water connections that need to be regularised, he said. He also sought a list of property owners who had not paid tax.

ಐಎಚ್‌ಸಿಎನ್‌ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಸದಸ್ಯ ಗೋವಿಂದನ್‌ ಕುಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ, ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಬೇರೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ನಗರಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿದರೆ ಬೀದರ ಅತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪರಂಪರೆ ತಾಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ನಗರದ ಒಳಗೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಪರಂಪರೆ ತಾಣಗಳು ಇದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಟ್ಟಡಗಳು, ಸ್ಮಾರಕಗಳು, ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆ, ಮನೆಗಳು, ಕಮಾನುಗಳು, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಅಪಾರ ಪಾರಂಪರಿಕ ಮೌಲ್ಯ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ ಎಂದರು.

ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ವತಿಯಿಂದ ಬೀದರ ನಗರದ ಪರಂಪರೆ ತಾಣಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಆ ಮೂಲಕ ಜನರ ಜೀವನ ಮಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಉತ್ತಮಪಡಿಸಲು ಸಹಕಾರ ನೀಡಲಾಗುವುದು ಎಂದರು.

ಪರಂಪರೆ ತಾಣಗಳನ್ನು ಮೂಲ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ನಗರದ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಯಾಗಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಪರಂಪರೆ ತಾಣಗಳ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿರಿಸಿ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಗೆತ್ತಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಟ್ಟಡಗಳ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ, ಒಳಚರಂಡಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ನಗರದ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್‌ ಪ್ಲಾನ್‌ ರಚಿಸುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ನಗರದ ಪಾರಂಪರಿಕ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿರಿಸಬೇಕು. ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ಈ ಕುರಿತು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ನಡೆಸಿ ವರದಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಿದೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.
