Nandini launches mango lassi

President of the Kalaburagi and Bidar District Milk Producers Union Revanasiddappa V. Patil launched mango-flavoured Nandini Lassi here on Thursday.

Mr. Patil said the new product, available in 200ml packet, was priced at Rs. 15. If it received good response, the federation plans to produce 1,000 litres of lassi a day, he said. Initially the federation plans to produce 500 packets per day.

He said the farmers should make full use of the concessions extended by the government to increase milk production in the district. Currently the total production of milk in the district was 58,146 litres a day as against the demand of 70,948 litres a day. The federation owned seven chilling plants, including one in Kalaburagi with a storage capacity of one lakh litres, and six in Bidar district with a total storage capacity of 66,000 litres, Mr. Patil said.


It is available in  200ml packets and is priced at Rs. 15

Dairy development in Bidar

Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) will start diploma courses in hygienic meat production, packing and storage, said C. Renuka Prasad, Vice-Chancellor, here on Thursday.

He was speaking at a function organised to mark KVAFSU’s Foundation Day. A programme to adopt Bidar district for comprehensive dairy development was launched on the occasion.

“KVAFSU will organise training programmes for slaughterhouse workers and meat traders about hygienic waste disposal. We have already conducted such training sessions in Bangalore. A model slaughterhouse will be established here, on the lines of those set up by the university in Bangalore and Shimoga,” he said.

“The university will also take up preservation of the Deoni breed of cattle. Only 1,500 heads of cattle of this breed are there in the district. A separate programme will aim at crossbreeding Deoni with high-yielding exotic varieties of cattle,” he added.

“A long-term plan is being implemented to increase the district’s milk yield to 2 lakh litres a day. We also plan to urge the government to come out with total health coverage of all animals,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Packaging unit for buffalo milk established in Bidar

It will cater to Hyderabad market where there is huge demand

The Bidar-Gulbarga Cooperative Milk Producers Societies Union Ltd. has set up a separate packaging unit for buffalo milk here to cater to the Hyderabad market.

This unit is part of the 30,000-litre packaging unit that has come up on the milk dairy premises on Janawada Road here.

Opportunity

“There is a huge demand for buffalo milk in Hyderabad. The city is within 140 km from Bidar and so we want to cash in on the opportunity,” union president Mallikarjun Biradar told presspersons here on Thursday.

“We collect 12,500 litres of buffalo milk a day. We plan to sell at least 8,000 litres a day in the Hyderabad market.”

Having a packaging unit in Bidar would help us address a major issue, he said.

Mr. Biradar said that till now they had to take all the milk collected in Bidar to Gulbarga to package it. The process took time, leading to a day's gap between collection and sale. With the packaging unit in Bidar, the delay would be avoided and we would be able to sell fresh milk, Mr. Biradar said.

“Till now, we sold a mixture of cow and buffalo milk. But with a separate facility to package buffalo milk, we can cater to a niche market and possibly increase our revenue,” he said.
